Cook Islands

RimataraLorikeet - 1
Kuhl's Lorikeet
Remote but accessible from Sydney, Auckland and LAX, this tour combines a world-leading ornithologist; rare, glorious and delightful birds; and South Pacific island magic by way of the habitat and the people.

Just over a week's tour in the Cook Islands is enough time to see six island endemics and two regional endemics plus snorkeling, relaxing, botany and culture. Internal airfares are inclusive and we will visit four islands starting from Rarotonga on Avarua and flying to Mangaia, Aitutaki and Atiu.

Atiu - 1

Each island is unique. Our meeting and acclimatising point Rarotonga on Avarua Island is the most populous yet still stunning with its sapphire-blue lagoon trimmed with sparkling white beaches and thundering breakers beyond on the reef. The brooding peaks dominate from every angle and this is where the lush forest houses our target species: Rarotonga Starling and Cook Islands Fruit-Dove.

BlueLorikeet - 1
Blue Lorikeet
After a couple of days enjoying island culture Dion will join us as we fly to Mangaia, the most remote, and perhaps the most heart-warming of the outer islands. Rarotonga Reed-Warbler abound here and the locals call this favourite bird the "island canary". The singing will follow us as we travel the swamps in the centre of the island looking for the much-harder-to-find Mangaia Kingfisher. Two nights here give plenty of time for our quest, plus we have our own cook!

Aitutaki has the world's most beautiful Lagoon and the flight in and out will floor you, as will the sweet Blue Lorikeet.

ChatteringKingfisher - 1
Chattering Kingfisher
Finally Atiu is environmentally the most impressive with almost all Black Rats eliminated as well as the Common Myna. An inspiring beautiful island, and very civilised. The endemic Atiu Swiftlet and Cook Island Fruit-Dove complement the regionally endemic Chattering Kingfisher, the dazzling Kuhl's Lorikeet and Rarotonga Flycatcher.

The Cook Islands has friendly people, laid-back island tempo, good infrastructure and relatively easy endemic and regional endemic birding
