Divine Lord Howe Island with
Providence Petrels Trip Report
LHI Woodhen by Ian Hutton
Another great birding trip to Lord Howe Island. The weather was fine and sunny all trip, allowing us to get around the Island to all of the best birding spots. The timing of the trip this week in march allowed us to see he summer breeding seabirds, plus the winter Providenec petrels had just returned.

From everyones comments, the highlighs of the trip were the afternoon spent under the mountains where we had a close encounter with Woodhens, and watched the Providence petrels come in at dusk. Then we had a boat trip out several kilometres off the Island where a little berley over the side enticed many hundreds of Providence petrels to come in and sit behind the boat. A mixture of Flesh footed and Wedgetailed shearwaters added to the spectacle.

The waders on North Beach were another highlight, with Ruddy turnstones, Bar-tailed godwits, Pacific golden plovers, Red-necked stints, Whimbrels, Double banded plovers and a Grey-tailed tattler all seen at very close quarters on the seagrass beds at low tide. Some snorkeling in the lagoon and great food at Pinetrees rounded off the trip nicely for everyone.
