When Major Thomas Mitchell described Nygan as a "long pond with many birds, ducks and brolgas", little did he realise that he had set the bird watchers of the future hearts soaring.

Since then the ponds, reservoirs, weirs and rivers - The Darling being the mightiest and muddiest - have swelled to support Hoary-headed Grebes, Grey Teal, Hardheads, Black-winged Stilts, Black-tailed Native Hens and Red-kneed Dotterels. Along the shores graceful Brolgas can be found with Mistletoebirds, Spotted Bowerbirds and Striped Honeyeaters.
There has been rain, and this will mean an explosion of life as plants and animals take advantage of the precious moisture. The red earth can cover with masses of colourful wildflowers. Birds crowd around flooded creeks and water holes. Frogs emerge to feed on the thousands of insects. Bird species that have migrated during the dry periods, return for the favourable conditions.
Inland Thornbill, Western Gerygone, Chestnut-crowned Babblers, Zebra Finches and White-breasted Cuckoo-shrikes are all on the list. Sighted last tour Ground Cuckoo-Shrikes a strikingly elegant bird that had Alan Morris agitated with excitement. While travelling to and from, Pallid Cuckoos, Budgerigars and Double-barred Finches have also featured.
At our most northerly point, Bourke, runs deep in the Australian psyche; the larger than life character of a quintessential outback town holds sway against the sheer space of the beautiful surrounding country. The remoteness of this country is very attractive to return to.
