Barraba – NSW Hot Spot
Regent Honeyeater by Nevil Lazarus |
Barraba’s charming little town and surrounds have remarkable geological variety created by varied vegetation from the most westerly rainforest in NSW, to Mugga Iron Bark and White Box feeding Fuscous, Yellow-tufted and Black-Chinned Honeyeaters to name but a few.
My recent reconnaissance to Barraba highlighted that the good rainfall the area has had over the past few months make this a terrific spot. Worth more than one visit, it never ceases to amaze me the number of birds available for the viewing the moment you open the car door. Diamond Firetails flocked in front of the car on my departure from Wallabadah. At the service station White-throated Treecreeper, Restless Flycatcher, Yellow-rump Thornbill in a bush beside the car door, and this is on the recce when I race in and out without really stopping to actually raise the binoculars and look.

Transitional country. East meets west is what happens here with a multitude of species – Turquiose Parrots, Plum-headed Finches and so many spots for the Regent Honeyeater for heaven sakes. Red-winged Parrots at the station accommodation and dams bearing Great Crested Grebes nesting. From Ospreys and Hobbys to Speckled Warblers and the gorgeous Rufous Songlark in full spring song.
