Barraba – NSW Birding Hot Spot
Regent Honeyeater by Nevil Lazarus |
Barraba’s charming small town has been revitalised over the past few years and has a delightful array of rural heart-felt businesses, including the wonderful Playhouse Hotel where we will be staying. Combine that with it’s remarkable geological variety of vegetation from the most westerly rainforest in NSW, to Mugga Iron Bark and White Box feeding Fuscous, Yellow-tufted and Black-Chinned Honeyeaters to name but a few.

My recent reconnaissance to Barrabra highlighted that the good rainfall the area has had over the past six months makes this a terrific spot. Worth more than one visit, it never ceases to amaze me the number of birds available for the viewing. Hundreds of White-browed Woodswallow dazzled the bright blue sky with flocks of Little Lorikeets feeding on the flowering trees. White-throated Treecreeper, Restless Flycatcher and Yellow-rump Thornbill are prevelant while the raptors seem to have had a very good season; bringing my iding up to speed, happily!
Transitional country. East meets West is what happens here with a mutitude of species – Turquiose Parrots, Plum-headed Finches and so many spots to choose from for the Regent Honeyeater, although we still need a bit of luck there. Red-winged Parrots with their odd wing-beat and dams bearing Great Crested Grebes and Ospreys. Speckled Warblers and the Brown Songlarks feeding on mistletoe-dripping-trees with their extraordinary flowers. And of course mulitudes of Mistletoebirds. There is always plenty of bird happenings in these districts.
