Traditional Capertee Valley Weekend
The new spot for a traditional weekend is at Carol Probets recently purchased property that she is dying to show us, and very kind of her to invite us. Of course it will be inundated with birds due to her uncanny way with them – her love and care, and watering hole attracts all the finches and honeyeaters so anything listed below could turn up.

Set to the backdrop of soaring sandstone cliffs is the picturesque Capertee Valley, which, with its eucalypt forests and woodlands provides a haven for birds. The valley itself is unique and contains some unusual rock formations, one being the truly spectacular Pantoneys Crown, a huge mesa at the entrance to the Capertee Valley. As well, you have the pagoda rock formations for which the Gardens of Stone National Park is famous.
The Capertee Valley is a must for any bird watcher, the rich diversity of bird life makes it one of the best birding spots in New South Wales. Here you can find the coastal as well as the inland birds. The Capertee Valley is also renown as probably the best place in Australia to find the endangered Regent Honeyeaters, Turquoise Parrots and Plum-headed Finches.
Zebra Finch by Neil Fifer
Some of the birds we will be looking for over the weekend include the Brown Treecreeper, the Plum-headed Finch, White-browed and Grey-crowned Babbler, the Hooded Robin, Diamond Firetail, Choughs and the Yellow-tufted Honeyeater. With a bit of luck we might even see the Regent Honeyeater, Speckled Warbler and some of the owls.
We will be staying at the western end of the valley where we will also have a good chance of seeing platypus.
