Capertee’s Little Sister – Wolgan Valley
Newnes Camping Grounds Spectaluar Mesa
This year Carol has let us in on a secret valley right next door to Capertee that is smaller, very beautiful and just as full of birdlife as its big sister. Wolgan Valley has the coastal as well as the inland birds. Like the Capertee Valley it is also a great place to find the endangered Regent Honeyeaters, Turquoise Parrots and Plum-headed Finches. We will still be staying in Capertee overnight as the Capertee Valley is always a must for any bird watcher, the rich diversity of bird life makes it one of the best birding spots in New South Wales.

Some of the birds we will be looking for over the weekend include the Brown Treecreeper, the Plum-headed Finch, White-browed and Grey-crowned Babbler, the Hooded Robin, Diamond Firetail, Choughs and the Yellow-tufted Honeyeater. With a bit of luck we might even see the Regent Honeyeater, Speckled Warbler and some of the owls.

We will be staying on the edge of the Wolgan Valley; descending on the first day through splendid views into valley floor.

Day 2 will find us back in the Capertee Valley itself, with it’s soaring sandstone cliffs and eucalypt forests; the woodlands providing a haven for birds. The valley itself is unique and contains some unusual rock formations, one being the truly spectacular Pantoneys Crown, a huge mesa at the entrance to the Capertee Valley. As well, you have the pagoda rock formations for which the Gardens of Stone National Park is famous.
