Carnarvon Gorge to QLD Coast
Regent Bowerbird by David Simpson |
Spectaclular Carnarvon Gorge lies hidden in the rugged ranges of Queensland’s Central Highlands. Over millions of years, running water has carved a gorge system through soft sandstone – creating magestic cliffs that change colour with the movement of the sun. Carnarvon Creek flows year round, giving life to a luxuriant growth of ancient ferns and palms, abundant wildlife and birds, amd Aboriginal rock art sites.

We will meet after a flight to Roma Queensland and travel to the Gorge for 2 nights and then on through delightful Central Queensland to Maryborough, the “Happiest Town” in Queensland. Allured by the Black-breasted Button-quail we will try to see at Inskip Point-Rainbow Beach, along with walks past the gorgeously restored old Queenslander homes on the Mary River Maryborough and the expansive Mt Walsh’s excarpments in the west.
Four nights stay in the same lovely 3.5 star motel, heading out each day north, south, east and west with the wonderful guide Trevor Quested of Sydney fame and retired locally some few years ago, revealing in this splendid birding area.

We will be endeavouring to see lots of warm climate birds such as the Squatter Pigeon, Mangrove Honeyeater, Rainbow Bee-eater, Spectacled Monarch, Beach Stone-curlew, Rose-crowned Fruit-dove, Little Shrike-thrush, Pale-yellow Robin, Regent Bowerbird and White-eared Monarch. There is even the possibility for the unflagging to try for the Marbled Frogmouth.
So set your sails for this escape to warmer climes filled with birding adventures and mingled with old world Queensland, cavernous gorges and tropical rainforest.
